ABSTRACT

A large number of risk factors lor coronary artery diseases are present in hyperlipidaemic patients, but hypertension is one of the most important risk factor. An anahsis of effect of a Unani formulation i.e. Sikanjbeen Sada was conducted on 30 patients, who attended A.K. Tibbiya College Hospital. Aligarh between 2001-2003. Mean systolic blood pressure was 136.8667 mmHg before treatment and 129.2477 mmllg after treatment; while the diastolic blood pressure was 89.2000 mmHg at the beginning of study and it reduced to S3.-1667 mmHg at the end of study. Statistically the effect of drug on systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significant. Serum Cholesterol level was 218.2000 mg/dl at 0 day and got reduced to 193.4333 mg/dl at 45th day. The serum Triglyceride was 224.4333 mg/dl and it reduced to 195.4667 mg/dl and the effect of drug on both was found significant. The result proves that the function of drug claimed by Unani physicians is significant

ABSTRACT

People with phlegmatic or cold and moist temperament have been described to be more susceptible to infectious diseases in Unani literature, mainly because they are considered to possess low level of immunity. In the present study an attempt has been made to establish a relationship between infectious diseases and different types of temperament. Patients showing clinical symptoms of some infection were categorised at two health care centers. The nature of infections was specific and confirmed by culture and sensitivity tests. Those found infected were included in the study and temperament of these patients was confirmed in the light of parameters laid down by Unani physicians. The percentage of patients of each temperament was calculated. More than 43% of patients were found to be phlegmatic [balghami] which was quite high percentage as compared to the patients of Damvi, Safravi and Saudavi temperaments which scored 22%, 21% and 12% respectively. It was concluded that phlegmatic patients possessing moist and cold temperament are more prone to infectious diseases

ABSTRACT

Atherosclerosis is the degenerative processaffecting all the sections of population of either sex, ageand socio-economic status. If the plaque is complicatedby blood clotting, it causes ischaemia and infarction ofthe tissues or organs, most vulnerable are heart andbrain. In the present [in vitro]study, twelve cardiotonicdrugs were selected which have been used by therenowned Unani physicians. The drugs were purchasedfrom Dawakhana Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, AligarhMuslim University, Aligarh and properly identified. All the drugs were powdered separately and theiraqueous solutions were prepared. Fresh human venousblood was mixed with them. Eight drugs prevented theclotting of blood in different concentrations so theywere identified as having anticoagulant effect. Neitherthe morphology of centrifuged blood cells was altered or hemolysis took place. The details are given in fulllength paper. Out of eight, details of four drugs arebeing given here

ABSTRACT

Niqris [gout] is a condition characterised by recurrent attacks of acute pain and swelling at first affecting only one joint, usually the metatarso-phalangeal joint of the big toe, later becoming polyarticular. Since ancient times it is believed that an excessive intake of baadi ghiza [food containing high purine contents] is the primary and essential cause of gout which results in deposition of Maddah-e-nigris [urates of tophi] in the articular and periarticular tissues. Although several potent and effective drugs like Allopurinol [Zyloric] and Sulphinpyrazone [Artiran] are available in modern medical treatment, they are not without side effects like gastritis, peptic ulcers, tolerance and dependence. Among several useful Unani drugs, Suranjan [Colchium luteum] is one which is claimed to be effective in this ailment. On an average the oral use of Suranjan Showed relief in symptoms in 94.3% of cases in 30 days without any side effect. Our study included 20 cases of chronic gout

ABSTRACT

Sixty patients [40 males and 20 females] of chronic maxillary sinusitis were selected in the Out-patients Departemnt of Moalijat, A.K. Tibbiya College, A.M.U., Aligarh. The patients were diagnosed on the basis of subjective symptoms, objective signs and routine investigations. Aerobic culture of nasal swab showed pseudomonas aeruginosa 50%; Klebsella 18% and Staphylococcus 11%. All the patients were treated by Indian System of Medicine [Unani]. The herbal drugs are [i] Joshina [Hamdard] which alters the consistency of phlegm towards normal; [ii] Expectorant or phlegmogogue and [iii] Nervine tonic [Biaz-e-kabir]. The results of therapy were analysed on the basis of symptomatic relief and findings of radiological examination. Clinical symptoms disappeared in 84% of the cases after 20th day of administration of drugs and the symptoms almost disappeared on 30th day. Radiological examination of sinuses revealed marked reduction in the thickness of mucosa of maxillary sinuses after one month of therapy. The drugs which are used in this system of medicine are cheep, easily available and are without any side effects
